People have been asking for change from some time now, weather its change in management techniques, change in the way business conducts itself or bringing in regulation, Arun Maira, Senior Advisor of BCG-India said, while addressing the All India Management Association (AIMA) 2nd BusinessResponsibility Summit on July 17, 2009.
Maira, who was also the Summit Director, introduced the days speakers and said, Today the society is demanding governments intervention in businesses and is asking it to levy regulations. And this is the reason why, I feel, there is an urgent need to reform the way business conducts itself.
He dwelled on the central focus of the Summit and said that the theme Purpose of the Corporation: Socialist, Capitalist or Both is very apt in todays world order. What if the only purpose of a corporation is socialistic what happens to profits then? Should capitalism be the sole purpose of any corporation? Or is it possible for a business or corporate house to co-exist and remain capitalist and socialist at the same time?
Maira asked and said that the AIMA Summit seeks to answer these very questions. He said that there are a few very important things a corporation should keep in mind. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of them. Where should a corporation draw a line when working for the society while keeping in mind the profits? he asked and added, Ethics is equally important for a business house. Ethics is the dharma of business. I also strongly feel that business leaders must think beyond themselves.
Maira, who has been associated with the Tata Group in the past, also read out a few lines from yet-to-be released book The Difficulty of Being Good authored by another speaker, Gurcharan Das, present at the Summit. He called the writers earlier book India Unbound seminal and landmark.
Adding to what Maira said, Minister of Corporate Affairs, Khursheed said, There should be enough freedom to compete in business. But there should be regulation, too; regulation to ensure that there is good competition. The first day session concluded with discussions on how to make regulations effective that can benefit both business and the society.
