Commencements 2009: Tatas Om Kaul, ICICIs Saurabh Singh recieve KJ Somaiya freshers

KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research holds induction programme for new batch on June 15 The KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai began its new season with an induction programme held at its campus situated at Vidyavihar on June 15, 2009. The orientation programme also saw eminent leaders addressing the coming-in batch. Om Kaul, MD Tata International; Vyas, MD, Dun and Bradstreet; and Saurabh Singh alumni and GM (HR) of ICICI Bank Ltd spoke to the students about their experiences and encouraged them to work for the betterment of the country.

After a colourful inaugural function, the students and their families were introduced to the KJ Somaiya faculty and staff. It was a good experience for the students since they got the opportunity and interacted with their immediate seniors and alumni. According to the Director of KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Dr Suresh Ghai, as per AICTE norms the institute has admitted 120 students for its PGDM course and 60 have been admitted in PGDM (Intl Business) and PGDM (Retail Management) courses.

While welcoming the new students to its campus the Dr Ghai said, The induction programme consisted of usual ice-breaker sessions on economics, statistics and financial accounting. Various team-building exercises, workshop on goal setting, time management, analysis of case studies and management readings events were also organised.

He added that general management books and articles from Harvard Business Review and other reputed journals were distributed amongst the students for presentations. Dr Ghai said, This is a practice at KJ Somaiya. The students are encouraged for delivering presentations so that we can judge and evaluate their public speaking skills apart from inculcating a reading habit in them.

This year, the ratio of girls in the class is 48% which is almost equal to the number of boys and the fee for the PGDM programme is Rs 1.35 lakh per year. The Director also said that the institute is preparing to welcome the second-year students who will be joining the campus from July 1, 2009.
