MAT May 2009 a moderate-difficulty test: An analysis

The total number of questions was 200 which the students had to finish within 150 minutes.

Like the last two years, MAT 2009 stuck to its basic pattern. Though the paper was lengthy, it was of average difficulty level where the candidates can score marks if they perform well in the sections of Logical reasoning, Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability. Thus, according to CAT experts, except Quantitative analysis section, which was a bit difficult, each section had few questions which were easily manageable, thus making the paper scoring.
The section on Language Comprehension had total 40 questions in the areas of vocabulary, English usage and Grammar and Reading Comprehension. This section had a 50:50 ratio of Reading Comprehension and Verbal questions. This section required good comprehensive skill, knowledge of grammar, English usage and Verbal reasoning. Overall the difficulty level was moderate.

The section of Mathematical Skills mainly dealt in the areas of Arithmetic and Higher Math which had questions in Profit and Loss, Percentages, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Averages, Mixtures and Allegations. The difficulty level can be said to be easy to moderate.

The third section was on Data Analysis and Data Sufficiency. The test area comprised of Data Interpretation (DI) and Data Sufficiency (DS) which like the previous sections consisted of 40 questions of 40 marks. DI had 28 questions whereas DS had 12 questions. Choosing the right sets in the DI section was the factor for scoring. DS on the other hand were relatively easier.

In the section of Intelligence Reasoning, the areas included Analytical Reasoning and Critical Reasoning. While the Analytical Reasoning section varied from easy to moderate levels, Critical Reasoning was more troublesome.
The last section was on India and Global Environment. This consisted sections of General Awareness and Business and Economy. Questions were mainly from International and National current affairs, people and their associated fields.

According to leading test prep institute T.I.M.E, the consolidated score is evaluated by taking only four areas into account. Indian and Global Environment is not the part of the consolidated score. Out of a maximum possible score of 160, a score of 80 is considered as expected score and any score above 100 would be very good, said T.I.M.E.

Offering their analysis, Career Launcher says that an overall score of 71-76 (excluding GK questions), will fetch the candidate 90% in MAT, while a score of 80+ will get 99 percentile.
