CII to hold conference on linking education to employability on Apr 21

The objective of this conference is to stress the need to strengthen the link between the education and employability. The backbone of a countrys growth story is the education system which is responsible for equipping the human capital of the country. India needs to create a futuristic vision to provide the link and also vision ambassadors to reach out to grass-root levels, says CII.

The conference will see the participation of the countrys leading policy makers, academicians, scholars and industry representatives (HR/Training & development, education). The conference has been divided into four Sessions: I) Literacy vs Employability, II) Ensuring Global Relevance, III) Promoting Excelence: Setting up Independent Accreditation System and IV) Promoting Excelence; Setting up Sector Skills Councils.

These are some of the basic issues related to education and employability to be addressed during the sessions:
Session 1: Literacy vs EmployabilityAs per the current definition, the literacy rate in India is at 71%. However, there is no specific measure for functional literacy. Do we need multiple ways of looking at literacy, giving different dimensions to functional literacy? Is there a case to define functional literacy that links to Employability? How do we measure functional literacy? What structural changes are required to link education to employability?

Session 2: Ensuring Global RelevanceTo take advantage of possessing one of the youngest populations in the world, it is necessary to build a robust workforce at par with global standards. How should India work towards developing world-class infrastructure to meet its domestic demand and become a global hub for knowledge to attract youngsters from overseas for higher studies?

Session 3: Promoting Excelence: Setting up Independent Accreditation SystemThe significance of uniform ratings and accreditation cannot be undermined. Is there a requirement of multiple independent/autonomous accreditation bodies? Will multiple competitive accreditation bodies and involvement of corporate sector add value? Will this system cover the entire spectrum of education including vocational education and training? Is the system ready to meet the challenges of scale?
Session 4: Promoting Excelence; Setting up Sector Skills CouncilsThe creation of Sectoral Skills Council is also a step forward towards achieving excellence. It will help identify the common skill-gaps and build skills of people across sectors. It would also bring together training providers, educational institutions and industry to deliver programmes that are relevant and cost-effective.

The four broad vision statements adopted by CII towards a larger vision of India@75 by 2022 are: India achieves 100% functional literacy; India builds 700 million globally employable workforce, comprising 200 million university graduates and 500 million vocationally skilled people; India develops world-class infrastructure to become a global hub for knowledge creation, talent development and entrepreneurial incubation; and India meets its own unique domestic demand while setting global standards and becomes a scale provider of value based learner-centric education, skills development and professional educators through industry partnerships.
