Q&A with Ritushree, IIM Indore

Read below the MBAUniverse.com special Q&A with Ritushree Sarda, the student of Post Graduate Programme in Management of IIM Indore.

Q: What does your institute call/term the personal interaction and assessment rounds, and when and where were they held last your?
A:
It is called Group Discussion & Personal Interview. Last year it was held in spanning over the months of Feb & March.

Q: What was the format of these rounds when you took them last year?
A:
The Group Discussion is Case Based where a situation or problem is given and for which one has to give their suggestions and by the end of the GD people should come to some meaningful conclusion or solution as the case may be. The Interview round is not homogeneous and is different for each person though definitely they ask some or the other question from the detailed form that you fill in before.

Q: According to you, what do the personal interaction and assessment rounds aim to assess/ test in the MBA applicants?
A:
I think they test the social interaction skills which include being a good listener apart from speaking skills and how effectively one can convey his points to the others. They also test the logical thinking ability in the GDs. In the personal interview they check a persons attitude towards work and life how has he done in life up till then and what has he learnt from it. They check whether you are as good as you seem to be in paper. Apart from this they may check host of other things like general awareness, your stress taking ability, how clear one is about his future goals, presence of mind and logically thinking abilities.

Q: According to you, how should MBA aspirants prepare for these rounds? What is your advice?
A:
One should increase his general awareness by reading newspapers and knowing what is going around him. He should more importantly introspect and see how much he knows about himself as maximum of the questions asked in an interview would revolve around what he puts in paper about himself. One should be sure of knowing enough about everything that he is written in the papers. Also it is important to prepare the usual questions like Why MBA? Tell me something about yourself? What are your strengths and weaknesses? etc as we generally put them off thinking we will manage it but often miss out important points at that point and are often not able to leverage good points and in a subtle manner direct the interview to a topic you are comfortable with.

Apart from doing the above I think Practicing in a few MOCK GDs and taking some mock Personal Interviews really helps as you are able to better realize your shortcomings and work on them.
