Like other management entrance tests Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a test of Life Skills - Skills/techniques which are necessary to live an efficient life. It contains General Intelligence and Logical/Analytical thinking, Arithmetic, Interpretation and Understanding of Data, General Awareness and English Language.
Working under intense pressure, managers need to articulate their thoughts well, calculate risks correctly, take decisions fast, create competencies in their workforce and ultimately deliver results. It has been seen across the corporate world that managers with proven superiority in these life skills end up delivering more of the better. That is, higher volumes of higher quality output.
This explains to a large extent the current structure of Management Aptitude Test. If you are a serious aspirant, you will do well to work very hard at these basic life skills. All through your managerial career, you will find them immensely beneficial when push will come to shove!
Technically speaking, MAT contains total 200 questions divided equally between Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, General Knowledge and Reading Comprehension and English Usage (40 on each). Questions from this topics comes in a jumbled form in the paper.
As far as latest MAT test (held on December 07, 2008) is concern there were questions on Arithmetic topics like Numbers, Fractions, SI and CI, Time Speed and Distance (including Trains and Boats & Streams), Races, Averages, Percentages, Work and Time (including Pipes and Cisterns), Profit and Loss, Mixtures, Profit and Loss, Calendar, Ratio and Proportion, Mensuration, some of the questions were also from topics like Simple Applications of Trigonometry, Probability and Application of Derivatives.
To check the general intelligence of the candidates there were questions on Direction Sense, Calendar, Relations, Linear and Matrix arrangements, Conclusions-Statements, Assumptions-Statements, Coding-Decoding, Course of Action-Statements, Inferences-Statements, Visual Reasoning and Logically completion of series etc.
To check the English Language ability of the candidate the MAT takers generally asked questions on Reading Comprehension and English Usage (EU). The EU specifically contains questions on Fill in the Blanks, Identify the Best way of Writings, Analogies, Para Jumble, Sentence Correction, Synonyms, Antonyms and Critical Reasoning.
General Awareness questions generally based on both the traditional and dynamic GK. The questions Economics, Current Affairs, Awards and Prizes, Business and Appointment are generally be the part of GK questions of MAT.

How does MAT compare with other management exams? Following are the points which make MAT different from the other important exams like CAT, XAT and FMS etc.
One of the Most Senior exam conducting bodies -
The All India Management Association (AIMA) - the authority which conducts the MAT was created as an apex body of professional management with active support of the Government of India and Industry in 1957. It is one of the senior organizations which take written test for admission into B-Schools in India. AIMA has been conducting MAT since 1988.
More opportunities to attend the test in a year
AIMA conduct MAT four times in a year on the first Sunday of February, May, September and December.
Maximum number of affiliated institutes
Although the number of participating institutes vary from MAT to MAT, but on an average 250-300 institutes accept the scores of MAT.
Maximum number of candidates -
On an average 6 to 8 lakh candidates write MAT each year (around 1.5 to 2 lakh in each MAT)
How should a student prepare for MAT?
General Strategy
The following should be the plan for the next 60 days for different testing areas
General Awareness Marks from this area do not include in the merit list, but to achieve the cut-off marks in this area is necessary.
Keep an eye over the major political, corporate, sports, economy, national-international events of the last one year. Learn the traditional General Knowledge like which is the highest, lowest, biggest, shortest, maximum production, minimum production, whos-who etc. from any good book.
QA, LR, DI and DS Understand the basic fundamentals of Arithmetic topics (Numbers, Percentages, Averages, Profit and Loss, Work and Time and all other topics), Permutation and Combination, Probability and Trigonometry. In recent couple of MATs there were questions on simple applications of derivatives also, so learn understand this topic also.
The tables upto 25 (preferably 30), squares upto 35, cubes upto 20, fractions should be have to be remember by heart.
Practice of various short-cut and approximation techniques in Arithmetic and DI respectively is necessary.
English Language Learn the vocabulary from the standard list of vocabulary, which regularly asked in the written test (available in various forms in market).
Learn the some of the standard rules of sentence corrections available in various grammar books.
See good programs (in English), telecast on channels like Discovery, National Geographic, History Channel, BBC News etc. It helps you to develop the GK as well as understand the RC passages. Read good books, as many of as you can.
Solve at least one Mock MAT paper per week and analyze it thoroughly.
Specific Strategy
The following should be your day to day routine for the next 60 days
1.Take 6 to 8 hours intense sleep every day it is necessary for your mental health and memory specially.
2.From the remaining 16 hours, four to five hours should be dedicated to reading good books, watching good movies and program telecast on channels like, Discovery, National Geographic and History Channel etc.
3.Apart from this regular practice of four to five hours daily of the various test areas of MAT like Arithmetic, DI, DS and LR and solving and analyzing of one Mock MAT paper per week is sufficient to get good marks in MAT.
