CII KM India 2008: Master Classes on Innovation & Knowledge Strategy offer insights for corporates & academia

They discussed about Human Values, Learning and Innovating. According to them Creativity is generating new, original ideas while innovation is putting those ideas to work and getting results. They took the discussion from Inhaling = Learning and Exhaling = Innovating, to overview the 4 innovation styles.

They defined 4 innovation styles as:

Visioning: To envision the ideal future
Modifying: To refine and optimize what has come before
Experimenting: To combine and test different factors
Exploring: To discover the radically new and novel

To nurture a healthy team environment for innovation, each approach must be recognized, valued, and put to its best use, while practicing versatility among all four approaches.
In the process they mentioned the difference between Successful vs. Extraordinary team. And they quoted Frank Carrubba, HP Labs saying; extraordinary team members found in themselves the quality of spirit and truth.
In the master class of Rory L Chase, Managing Director, Teleos on Creating a World Class Knowledge Strategy proper flow chart of creating a Knowledge Strategy was discussed threadbare. His findings were to a great extent based on the Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise (MAKE). He discussed where to begin and how to Align Knowledge Strategy with the Business Strategy. He emphasized on the explicit linkage between the two.

In Implementing the Knowledge Strategy he talked about 5 stages:
Stage 1:Pre-implementation (up to 1 year)
Stage 2:Implementation (1-3 years)
Stage 3:Reinvigoration (4 6 years)
Stage 4:Inculcation (7 9 years)
Stage 4:Holistic (10+ years)

He said there are 4 key reasons why Knowledge Strategies fail:

Organizational Culture
Content
Technology
Project Management

He concluded that only in India and South Africa the phrase Knowledge Management is used while in other countries they have started using the phrase knowledge based management. He said the concept will remain in use though the nomenclature might change.
