After presenting the chat with IIM Bs student, MBAUniverse.com present a chat with Kapil Bhatia, student of IIM-Is Post Graduate Programme, where he shares with MBAUniverse.com his experience while into IIM-I, and campus life.

Q- What is the importance of preparation for a candidate wanting to crack management entrance exams like CAT, XAT and others? How important was preparation in your personal journey to your campus?
A- No endeavor is meaningful until it poses a challenge. Its this element which brings rewards and above all, a sense of satisfaction. Same applies to CAT, XAT and other reputed management competitions too. Importance of preparation therefore shouldnt be even a question. Focused preparation especially during last 5 months makes all the difference. As far as management competitions are concerned, one requires both speed and accuracy to succeed. Needless to say, devotion and preparation become the pre requisites for it.

Q- How did you prepare for management entrance exams like CAT, XAT and other exams? Please elaborate. (Kindly share a detailed answer for this question)
A- First of all, I identified the basic requisites for cracking management exams. Seniors at college were of great help. It turned out that I had to revisit X class maths for QA section, solve puzzles and data sufficiency problems regularly for LR/DI section and read extensively, actively for VA section. Having this list in my hand, I decided to join a weekend preparatory classes being offered by a coaching institute so that I could be regular in my approach.
Thus, I embarked upon the journey towards CAT some 11 months before the actual exam date. I made it a point to take self-tests after going through a particular concept. In the last few months, I started timing my performance
in these tests. I cannot, ever, over rate the importance of taking mock-tests in last 4 months and analyzing them thoroughly to know my areas of strengths and weaknesses.

As far as general awareness was concerned, I developed a hobby of reading newspaper (The Hindu) daily for an hour or so, even when I was in second year of my college.

Q- Did you enroll into a coaching or test-prep institute? How did it help?
A- I did enroll myself for weekend classes being offered by Career Launcher, Delhi. The classes started in Dec 05- eleven months before the actual CAT exam. I consciously chose to join the preparatory classes so that I could prepare in a timely manner and have a feel of competition simultaneously.
The institute helped in more than one ways as I got access to:

Precise and relevant reading material as and when required
In-class performance-review quizzes
Eminent faculty (esp. in the batch composed largely of to-be engineers
A rich variety of mock tests e) and above all, motivation to give in our best efforts.

Q- How should an aspirant choose the right test-prep institute? What should be the parameters for making this choice?
A- This evaluation is slightly tricky for an aspirant. But, equally important at that. In my opinion, quality of the faculty and competency level of colleagues in any prep-institute makes all the difference between various institutes.

Having said that, one should also ensure that the institute under consideration provides regular and accurate feedback to the aspirants. Special sessions on G.K, personality development, current affairs etc. also help an aspirant to add to his knowledge.

The quality of mock tests being offered by the institute deserves an even more critical eye. The mocks should offer a great deal of variety (in terms of paper pattern and difficulty level) andshould be popular among the aspirants so as to provide a feel of real competition.

Q- How is life in a top B-school from a students point of view? What are the highs and lows!
A- At a top B-school, a student finds himself in the midst of one of the greatest and more diverse talent pools of our nation. A student is definitely intrigued by the quality of academic resources, courses to be dealt with, eminent guest speakers from both national as well as international forum, opportunities to be a part of real-life projects etc.
Various student-initiated activities, parties, special dinners and sports activities light up the place every now and then.
Among the dreaded lows of a B-school life, rigorous academic schedule features high on an otherwise small list.
