While addressing a CII organized special session in New Delhi on May 8, Dr Prahalad said, In my vision, India of 2022 can emerge as a major force provided it has economic strength, technological vitality and offers moral leadership to the world.
Upbeat about the future of India, Dr Prahalad identified six big opportunities for India. These include: India turning its population into a distinct advantage and thus becoming worlds largest pool of trained manpower; becoming a home for at least 30 of Fortune 100 firms; account for 10% of world trade; becomes a source for global innovations; focus on the flowering of its arts, science, and literature; and become the new moral voice for people around the world.
In his address to the business tycoons, intelligentsia and policy makers in the capital, Dr Prahalad highlighted the role of education and training in making India a leading global super power. Dr Parahad said that India should produce 200 million college graduates and 500 million trained and skilled workforce by achieving universal literacy.
India can play a dominant role in world commerce and trade and Indian companies can be foremost players on the world arena, Dr Prahalad believes. Said Dr Prahalad, India, along with China, accounted for a significant portion of the World trade in 17th century. India can recapture its old glory. Many of companies can be globally competitive, and I have a vision that 30 Indian companies should be part of Fortune 100 list in 2022.
When asked by MBAUniverse.com on what kind of companies will make to the top of global list, Dr Prahalad said, The companies will be based on meritocracy, be global in their mindset, and be fiercely competitive. Apart from the big names, I can see a lot seed around and many of them will make a mark on global stage.
Dr Prahalad also offered the principles that can help India achieve this vision:
#1 Entrepreneurial Transformation is all about having higher aspiration than resources
#2 Imagine the Future, because reality is first created in the mind
#3 Focus on Here and Now and also simultaneously focus on New Opportunities
Putting strong emphasis on being positive and envisioning the future first, rather than focusing on the current problems, Dr Prahalad said, When Mahatma Gandhi called for Purna Swaraj (Total Independence), he didnt know exactly how it will be achieved, but he dreamt of it! Similarly, when American President John F Kennedy said USA will put the man on the moon, he didnt know how it will happen, but had a vision. So, India should not just think of all the constraints it has, but focus on the big opportunity to shape the world order.
Commenting on the inspirational lecture, Mr KV Kamath, President CII and MD of ICICI Bank said that the CII is building a comprehensive vision for India@75 and is drawing from the vision developed by Prof Prahalad. Mr Kamath said that CII has found Prof. Prahalads vision inspiring and achievable. CIIs current plans and initiatives tackle most of the goals presentedby him, said Mr Kamath.
