New Initiative: Top B- Schools collaborate to offer Doctoral Programme in Management

This is the first of its kind in the country where three Business Schools together offer a Ph.D programme. These institutes are: School of Business Management, NMIMS University, Mumbai, T.A.Pai Management Institute, Manipal and Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship, Bangalore.

The aim of the programme is to develop a resource for innovative thinking and investigation in management, oriented both towards academia and industry. The Ph.D. programme is offered in Business Policy, Marketing, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Human Resources & Behavioral Sciences and Operations, informed NMIMS.

Eligibility qualification for this programme includes a Masters degree or equivalent in relevant disciplines like humanities, social sciences and commerce, from a recognized university or a Post-graduate Diploma in Business Administration. Further, the candidate should have full time Work Experience of at least 2 years in executive or supervisory capacity after obtaining Masters Degree.

The Selections will be through a three-stage selection process. Candidates have to submit their applications for the programme, along with a two-page Statement of Purpose that describe the area of research interest. All candidates will be required to appear for a written Research Aptitude Test. And finally candidates short-listed after the written test will be invited to make a presentation to a team of experts, based on their Statement of Purpose. The presentation will be followed by an interview.
NMIMS informed that the last date of receipt of the filled application form is June 16, 2008. The date of the entrance exam is June 29, 2008.

Sharing details about the programme structure, NMIMS informed MBAUniverse.com that Stage 1 will be Course Work where candidates without MBA qualifications will need to undertake course work equivalent to MBA first year at NMIMS, Mumbai, TAPMI, Manipal or XIME, Bangalore in classes spread over one year, during the first year of the Ph.D. programme. Those with MBA qualifications will be given exemption from the first year if they are declared successful in the waiver test. In the second year, candidates will receive classroom interaction in five compulsory subjects. The second stage is Proposal and Candidacy where candidates will have to submit their research proposals within 3 - 6 months after completion of Stage I. Stage III is the Dissertation. Stage IV is Submissions and Evaluation of the thesis and the final stage is when candidates appear for a Viva.

The programme is expected to commence from September 4, 2008.
