Excerpts from the Interview:
Q: How do you see this years placements at ISB?
A: ISB placements this year are phenomenal, especially in terms of increasing number of international offers. The number of international companies visiting the ISB has doubled, which show clear acceptance of ISB as global business school. There is a 100% jump in international offers over last year.
The average domestic salary offered at ISB this year is Rs 19 lakhs. This was more than double the average salary of ISB grads before they entered the institute a year back, which stood at Rs 7.19 lakhs.
Another unique feature of this year was that traditionally Industry tends to look for engineering-MBA combination, but for the first time phenomenal quality of non-engineers MBA from diverse background were chosen by big recruiters. This is been most diverse class that we have seen at ISB.
Since all ISB students have work experience, we track what sectors and companies they were working in prior to ISB programme, and what have they chosen now. This year 81% of students made career shifts! This is the highest percentage of career shifts at the ISB so far.
Q: What is the reason behind this massive career shift?
A: ISB is always been seen as a B-School for career shifters. Large numbers of people are coming to ISB for making their career shifts. Some have shifted company and some have shifted functions.
Of the 81% career shifts, 50% were shifts both in function and industry, 21% were career shifts in function and the remaining 10% were shifts in industry. In this 74% software engineers shifted careers, 26% CAs shifted careers and 100% doctors shifted careers. The compensation of doctors have gone five times.
These are people who want to shift their careers because either they are not satisfied with their company or job-profile. Some have shifted their career or company to make a new start and to take a jump in their career and salary.
Q: What about the spirit of entrepreneurship at ISB campus? Are graduates treading this path
A: Yes, they are. Several students met for the first time during the programme at the ISB and have decided to chart new path for themselves. Classmates who competed with each other during the year are now working together as business partners!
ISB is producing more entrepreneurs, with 12 to 15 students opting out of placements this year.
The new ventures are spread across various industries such as Nano technology, Financial Services, Knowledge Process Outsourcing, and Contract Research.
Even companies like NIIT also encourage ISB students to start their own company, which will be fund by NIIT and work under NIIT umbrella. There is one such company, which will be started together with the NIIT very soon.
Q: Coming to the next academic session at ISB, when is it scheduled to start?
A: The new academic season at ISB will commence in the first week of May 08.
Q: What is the batch size at ISB?
A: ISB is a fast growing institution. Every year we increase the number of student-intake. Current batch size was 420 students, which will rise to 450 students for the session starting May 08. Going forward, we plan to further increase it to 560 students in the next academic year in 2009.
Q: ISB accepts GMAT scores. What should one score for getting into ISB?
A: This years GMAT average was 707 and median was 710. It tends to go up every year, but it will be in the same range.
