Mr Prem was at IMT campus to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award 2008. While receiving the award, Mr Prem said, I am overwhelmed with a feeling of love and nostalgia. Its the same campus where I grew up. I feel proud to receive this award today.
In his inspirational address, Mr Prem urged the passing out students to not succumb to the way things are done in corporate India, but to add new energy and dynamism. He communicated his message through a story of Bumblebees.
In the story, Bumblebees were bees who were capable of jumping 8 inches. When their owner decided to put them in a glass jar of 6 inches high, and put a lid on top, Bumblebees soon forgot to that they could jump 8 inches. They used to hit the glass lid, and since they couldnt come out of the jar, they soon could jump only 5 inches. Then, the owner decided to remove the jar-lid, because he was sure that no bumblebee would jump out because of their conditioning. And this turned out to be true!
After a few months, a new Bumblebee was put into the glass-jar and since there was no prior conditioning, this bee was able to jump 8 inches and hence could jump out of the jar. Seeing the new bee jump out, soon the earlier bees realized that they too were capable of the same, and decided to jump out and get liberated.
Comparing the new bee to the freshly minted MBAs, Mr Prem said, You should be the new bee that thinks fresh and contributes to the businesses that you work in.
Coming from one of their ilks, the message went down well with the over 700 students dressed in their caps and convocation gowns.
Mr Prem has been Managing Director of Reebok in India since October 2003. Prior to joining reebok he has had stints in Ranbaxy as Management Trainee-in Marketing Department, and 4 years with Mescos as Factory Manager and then Product Management for the Mescos domestic brand. He is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce and a management graduate from IMT Ghaziabad.

For young business leader and alumnus of Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad (IMT), Mr Subhinder Singh Prem, MD, Reebok India, on March 18, it was a home coming of sorts.
