FT MBA 2008 Rankings: Wharton is # 1 B-school; ISB Hyderabad debuts in global Top 20

While University of Pennsylvanias Wharton Business School has topped the table, its the Hyderabad based Indian School of Business (ISB) that has made India proud with its inclusion in global top 20 ranking. ISB is ranked at # 20, ahead of more fancied B-schools like Kellogg School of management (#24) and UCLA Anderson (#25).

The news brought cheer at ISB. Speaking on this achievement, Dr M Rammohan Rao, Dean, ISB, said, This is a landmark event for the ISB. It sums up our single-minded goal to be recognised as a global centre of excellence in business education. This ranking is an important milestone in our journey to be an internationally top-ranked research-driven, and independent management institution that grooms leaders for the world.
As per the FT 08 rankings, there are only seven B-schools from Asia-pacific region that have made it to this prestigious ranking. ISB is the only Indian B-school to figure in this tally.

According to Financial Times, a total of 156 business schools that met the criteria for participation were included in the survey. To be eligible to participate, a business school must be internationally accredited by a body such as the AACSB, Amba or Equis; it must have a full-time MBA programme that has been running for at least five years; and it must have graduated its first class at least three years ago. The FT surveys graduates three years after they have completed the degree, to assess the effect of the MBA on their subsequent career progression and salary growth.

The criteria used in the FT rankings were grouped into three main areas: alumni salaries and career development, the diversity and international reach of the business school and its MBA programme, and the research capabilities of each school. Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) rates supplied by the World Bank are then used to convert the remaining salary data to US$ PPP equivalent figures.
