Top companies are beginning to understand that sustaining peak performance requires a firm-wide commitment to developing leaders that is tightly aligned to organizational objectives. Dr Goldsmith was speaking at a session organized by Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi.
Dr Goldsmith said: Just as employees need feedback from leaders, leaders can benefit from feedback from their employees. Employees can provide useful input on the effectiveness of procedures and processes as well as input to managers on their leadership effectiveness. But Dr Goldsmith cautioned that there is a fundamental problem with all types of feedback. It focuses on past, on what has already occurred, not on the infinite variety of opportunities that can happen in the future. As such, feedback can be limited and static as opposed to expansive and dynamic.
Dr Goldsmith said the corporate world is going to see a shift from expert coaching to peer coaching. He advised companies to develop the culture of peer coaching in their organization to reap maximum benefit.He asked executives to help others achieve positive, lasting change in behaviour.
Dr Goldsmith, who has been named one of the 50 great thinkers and leaders, asked the gathering, which included top executives of India Inc, to help more and judge less their colleagues and fellow workers. Learn as much as possible and help as much as possible, was his message to the executives.
