E WEEK YATRA by Shubha Narayanan:
Look who I said Hi to
February 2, Kolkata, NSHM Knowledge Centre, 3:30 pm
I am still pinching myself. I cant believe I actually met the celebrated writer-thinker PeterDe Bono. It was just for a quick two minutes, immediately after he inaugurated the Biz Bazaar at the NSHM Knowledge campus grounds.
I am not sure if I asked him a smart question, but I definitely got a smart answer.
Me: Sir, do you feel entrepreneurs are born or made?
De Bono: Made, of course. Only bodies are born, my dear.
Unlikely pair
February 6, Chennai, MOP Vaishnav College for Women
5:00 pm
Down the narrow road at over-crowded Sowkarpet, crammed between grocery stores, over a stinking gutter lies the tiny shop of Venkat Iyer, a cobbler who makes Rs 200 on a lucky day.
Iyers fortunes may be about to change, thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of a young student of MOP Vaishnav College for Women. Preeti, a design student is now training Iyer to produce eco-friendly designer chappals. Iyers skills as a cobbler are remarkable. He used to make low cost chappals for the poor using spare leather strips. Thats when I thought Why dont I source waste cloth material from tailors and we could use them to make trendy chappals? she explained.
Iyer has a lot to look forward to in the coming days. The new line of business will get a kick-start when he will participates in the MOP annual bazaar next month, where he, along with his brother, will open shop in the campus and create chappals for students. Preeti plans to price the chappals at Rs 170 each. Iyer is thinking of investing his earnings back into the business, and dreams of becoming a wholesaler someday.
Preetis innovation plus his own willingness to risk a new venture the combination could change Iyers life. Such is the power of entrepreneurship!
Mid Week Reflections
Kolkata. Indore. Mumbai. Delhi. Chennai. Coimbatore. Bangalore. Seven cities in seven days: thats my E-Week Yatra. Tearing across the country in the peak of winter, burping over airline food, grabbing cat naps in cars, checking out so many campuses every day: thats my E-Week Yatra.
Feeling the pulse of promising youth, meeting dreamy-eyed youngsters planning to make it big, sharing their energy and creative ideas, and being swept into their excitement. Thats my E-Week Yatra.
Im poised at my journeys midpoint; three more days to go. And it has been such an exhilarating joyride that I dont want it to end, and I dont want to miss a thing. I crib when I am in transit. I get restless waiting in lobbies. I feel cheated if I reach sessions late. I want to absorb every drop of inspiration.
Campuses across the cities have been rocking this E Week.
The formal nature of the inaugural events on Day 1 in Kolkata rapidly dissolved into the fun and frenzy of activities a day later. Students in Indore joined into celebrate the E Week at campus on a Sunday. Students in Mumbai were back to business on Monday, getting E Week rolling in their usual bindaas way.
Tuesday unleashed excitement in Pune, as students and faculty roared through the streets in a two-wheeler rally than saw their Director shouting E Week slogans for the entire 20 km.
Enthusiasm was at its peak in Chennai campuses on Wednesday, as the students organized street plays, rallies and endless panel discussions.
So far, my E-Week Yatra has been enlightening, entertaining and very eventful. And I am hungry for more!
