Retail sector is booming, says Mr Ajay Maken

With this come vistas of opportunities in employment as well. Realizing this fact Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) has organized a one-day seminar on retailing, which was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Urban Development Mr Ajay Maken on November 29.

Presiding over the seminar, the Mr Maken called retail sector is the most debated issue both in parliament and among masses. He said, India is growing leaps and bounds and retail sector is booming! Today from US $ 350 million this sector will go grow to about US$ 450 million by 2011.

In his address, Mr Maken posed the question that can India go on to open this sector in the same way as developed country. Mr Maken said, We need the big player to remove the intermediaries culture but at the same time we have to take care that the entire retail market will not go into the hands of only few people.

According to FDDI, Modern retail business needs 3.5 million trained personnel in retail during the next couple years.

To meet the demand trained professionals in retailing FDDI has set a Center for Retail to impact quality driven professionals learning in the field. Since 2006, FDDI has been running courses like Post Graduate Diploma in Retail Management (PGDRM), three year Diploma In Fashion Merchandizing & Retail Management (DFMRM), and one year Diploma In Retail Sales Management (DRSM).
