Som Mittal to take over as NASSCOM President; education and training high on agenda

Mr. Mittal will assume the office of the President from January, 2008. He is presently the head of services business of Hewlett-Packard for Asia-Pacific and Japan region.

Mr Mittal holds a B.Tech from IIT, Kanpur and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. He has been through advanced programs at Harvard and IMD.

Speaking on his appointment, Mr. Mittal said I am honored to take up this role as President of NASSCOM at this exciting stage of the industrys lifecycle when the Indian IT/ITeS sector has established its position in the global landscape and is continuously defining newer benchmarks.

Referring to challenges for IT industry, Mr. Mittal said that apart from sustaining growth of the IT industry, the real challenge would be to generate resources and prepare a workforce through right education and excellent training module. This will ensure that nobody could take away Indias competitiveness in the sector.

Mr Mittal takes over from much respected leader Mr. Kiran Karnik. On the occasion, Mr Karnik said, It is a matter of great satisfaction to be handing over the reins to such a capable individual. The industry has come a long way in the last few years and it is a matter of great pride for me to have been part of this success story. I look forward to working with Som over the next few months as we make our respective transitions.

Mr Som Mittal is not new to NASSCOM where he was its Chairman for the year 2003-04. He has a rich experience of over 32 years of which last 18 years have been in the IT industry. He presently heads the Services business for Hewlett Packard in Asia Pacific & Japan. Prior to this, he has been Managing Director of Digital/Compaq and Chief Executive with Wipro.

He has worked with both Indian Companies as well as multinationals in various capacities. He has worked in all segments of the industry, software and IT services, hardware and peripherals. In IT services, his experience covers a broad spectrum including Applications, IT infrastructure, Tech support and R&D centers. He brings with him rich experience and understanding of opportunities, challenges and issues being faced by these sectors.

Besides being actively associated with NASSCOM, he has been closely associated with other industry bodies like MAIT and CII. He was directly involved with the formulation and implementation of the Karnatakas IT policy. He has been on the CII National Council for several years and has been on Chief Ministers IT Task Force. He is also the Founding member of the IIIT, Bangalore and the Board if IT Education Standards. In recognition of his contribution to the industry, IIT Kanpur conferred him Distinguished Alumnus Award.
