HR should move from backroom to boardroom, says Manish Sabharwal, Chairman of Teamlease at IMI HR Summit

Mr. Sabharwal was delivering his inaugural address at IMI HR Summit. The Summit, held on August 30-31, centered round the topic Managing Talent for Global Competitiveness: Issues & Challenges. Its talent that makes a difference to corporate performance. HR should move from backroom to boardroom, and think like a business manager What is the difference between a Jet and a Sahara, or ICICI and IDBI Bank? The people! Thats what made the difference.

Mr Sabharwal is the Chairman and co-founder of Teamlease Services, the largest temporary staffing company in India. Earlier he co-founded India Life, an HR outsourcing company, in 1996 that was acquired by Hewitt Associates in 2003. Subsequently, he was Managing Director of Hewitt Outsourcing (Asia) based in Singapore. He holds an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1996.

In his speech at IMI, Mr Sabharwal drew on his successful entrepreneurial experiences and from the business operations of his company Teamlease.

Emphasizing the role of teams in high performance businesses, he said, There is this big myth about individual heroism. Business is a team sport, not an individual game. Individuals ability to work in teams is the key Unfortunately our education doesnt teach teamwork. Its purely focused on individual performance.

What makes a good team? Mr Sabharwal offered some answers. Great teams are made up of people with different skills. The core team shouldnt possess same skills but complementary skills, he said. At Teamlease, in our core team, we have people who love execution and others who like business development.

Offering a solution to the growing attrition level in corporate India, Mr Sabharwal said, Companies cannot retain top talent with money and perks alone. If the company can provide a larger purpose to its people, that can make them feel committed.

Teamlease Services is Indias leading staffing company and provides a range of temporary and permanent manpower solutions to over 650 clients. Teamlease started operations in 2002 and now has 70,000 employees in over 464 locations.
