Addressing this issue, Mr. R Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons and author of The case of the Bonsai Manager provided his insights on The Managers Dilemma: Analysis Vs Intuition at FICCI on August 21. It is felt that the more you think about the subject the better is the decision, but reality is that it is not quite true. Intuition is what you dont know you know. Logic and analysis are important to reduce the leadership mistakes, but they have their limitations where intuition plays a great role.
Mr Gopalakrishnan also advised managers and aspiring managers to learn about intuition. Managers must learn to develop intuition because no institute is a teaching intuition Intuition is not a new thing -- it is a very old concept and it happens to everyone but we dont recognise it, he said.
Intuition can be developed with immersion and contemplation, he added: It is important at the early stage of learning to deeply immerse in whatever you do. And then contemplate on the basis of your experience.
Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Vice President, FICCI, and Chairman & CEO, Jupiter Capital, observed in his welcome address, There are lots of new opportunities emerging these days and we can take advantage only with a good solid intuitive gut-feel approach based on platform of analysis and knowledge. Core of intuition should be based on analysis.
Also present on the occasion was Mr Amit Mitra, Secretary General, FICCI, who urged managers to take back the learning from this discussion and try to apply them in their businesses. There should be analysis without paralysis and on top of that you have intuition, he said.
