Said Mr Puri, Top companies hire talent with the right attitude. They want people with passion and those who are ready to deliver results. Skills are taken for granted, and skills also get outdated soon. Management graduates should focus on attitude development Unfortunately, management institutes dont teach how to develop the right attitude. B-schools students should seize the initiative.
Mr Puri went on to describe the talent-paradox in India. He said that while India is the second most populous country with a huge base of young people, India Inc still faces a shortage of talent. The gap exists because a majority of youth is not employable, he said.
Its become important for companies to find the right talent. But finding talent is not the only challenge that organizations face. The major challenge in front of an organization is finding, retaining and engaging the talent.
Offering career advice to young management graduates, Mr Puri said, Students need to do more homework and research before getting into an organization. It is very important for both organization and employer to know if they both fit in. A misfit leads to attrition. For instance, at a leading top private bank, only 15% of management trainees continued after 12 moths of their joining!
He advised students against job-hopping: Dont leave your first organization till you are sure you have added value to it. Stability and consistency are very important. Three years time frame is minimum to get experience and contribute to the organization.
Mr Puri, a veteran headhunter, advises corporates on peoples issues and conducts organizations SWOT analysis and management appraisals. He has conducted over 250 executive searches across sectors and functions, including over 50 CEO and Board level searches. He graduated with Economics Honors from Ferguson College, Pune, and subsequently completed his LL.B,Diploma in Management and CAIIB. He joined Executive Access in 1995 as a Senior Consultant and took over as Managing Director in November 1997. He has also served on FICCIs HR committee.
