Management education offers many new career opportunities, says Usha Albuquerque

Popular career advisor Usha Albuquerque, Director, Career Smart, spoke on the topic New Opportunities in Education and Careers issue at a forum organized by The Times Of India on June 20, in New Delhi. Her presentation was focused on various emerging career opportunities in India and education options abroad.

Ms Albuquerque started by outlining three choices that young students after finishing their schooling face. She said, You can choose from any professional course like engineering, architecture, law, management, or get into the basic degree in economics, literature or history. The other alternatives are for those who may not want to or cannot take up the degree of their choice: they can choose vocational courses like a diploma course in interior designing, journalism, and others.

How should a student make a choice between a good course and a good college? If it is a professional course, then the course is important so long as the college or institute provides the level of the standard which is required. If its a general program where you dont require professional training, then college is preferred over course, said Ms Alburquerque.

When MBAUniverse.com sought her views on management education, she answered, Management education offers huge opportunity because every organization whether it is retailing, rural sector, hospitals, forestry needs managers. So, management is a career that is here to stay.

She further added, New areas are emerging in management -- like Sports Management, Leisure Management, Retail Management and Event Management, which require a huge number of people. International Business is also a very huge area because the whole world is going global.

Students can also choose from among Media and Entertainment, Health Services, Biotechnology, Fashion Industry, Food Processing, Banking and Finance, Advertising and PR, and Telecommunications.

Ms Alburquerque added: You have to think about a few things clearly: where do I want to go, how does it fit in with my strengths, how do I get there. Ask yourself what role will education play and then evaluate subjects, duration, country, finance and funding.

To take the decision for going abroad for education, she suggested, Look at books, websites, talk to counselors... You should decide why you want to go abroad. Compare yourself with all over the world, which makes you realize where you are.
