This was a question popped up by a fresher at the commencement ceremony of new academic session at Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) Delhi during a talk by FMS alumnus and Corporate VP and Global Head of Sales & Marketing at HCL Technologies Mr Sanjeev Nikore. Responding to this question, Mr Nikore dipped into his decades of experience and offered his views: With the rise of data analytics and sophisticated reporting systems like ERP and SAP, decision making in companies is becoming more scientific and data driven. As Indian companies become global players, the stakes are rising too and we cannot afford to take chances. He said that apart from using data for taking decisions, managers today have to use data to build consensus and lead teams democratically.
Mr Nikore then went on to share a few tips with the future managers who will face the business world in a few years time: Globalization is the buzzword today. You will be employed by global companies or companies aspiring to be global players. You should have a global attitude too.
Mr Nikore also pointed out that people entering into management institutes should quickly analyze their strengths and decide on their specialization. Its easy to get lost out in the various things that happen on the campus. You should focus on a specialization that suits you. And do that early!
Emphasizing the need of soft skills for a management professional, he said, You should stand out in a crowd. Power dressing is important! So present yourself well.
