B-School teachers learn new ways of teaching!

Besides Dr Sarin, the program was co-conducted by Dr Mukesh Chaturvedi, professor of marketing, BIMTECH.

Both Dr Sarin and Dr Chaturvedi taught faculties from different business schools the effective way of teaching. The focus here was Lectures and the Case Study Method of teaching.

Speaking to MBAUniverse.com, Dr Chaturvedi said, When we are planning to teach a course, besides material, delivery is most important. It depends upon the nature of the topic and the level of participants We have to select a particular methodology or approach or technique. The lecture method and the case method are two ways of teaching Both methods are important because teachers cant evolve with students only with the case methods. Unless and until teachers discuss or use an interactive method, students will not able to understand.

Every method has its own advantages and limitations, said Dr Chaturvedi: There are lots of constraints with the lecture method and many misconceptions about the case method. There is no one complete or good way of conducting cases.

While talking about some ways of lecture methods, Dr Chaturvedi added, There are different ways in which a lecture session can be handled. One way is to let students ask a question or teachers can ask a question which students answer there may be presentations, exercises, puzzles, slides, illustrations etc. One must conduct sessions that are more interactive, where teachers take students along.

For the case method, faculty needs to be effective, they should have ability to communicate, emphasis, relate and articulate, said Dr Sarin. For making teaching more effective, a teacher needs to learn a lot said, he added. Faculty needs to learn as much as possible. They need to improve their thinking and try to learn from different practices. According to him, a teacher has variety of sources to learn and keep himself updated. One can learn by reading, through interaction with industry, through sessions with other teachers. Teachers should learn to relate to a situation. Along with communication, its important to have confidence, he said.

The program was attended by around 50 participants. Said Nidhi Sinha, a participant from the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology University: It was a great learning experience hearing Dr Sarin speak. After this session, my opinion about case based learning has also changed.
