IMFs chief economist Dr Raghuram Rajan to rejoin Chicago GSB

Welcoming Prof Rajan, Chicago GSB said, After three years as chief economist for the IMF, Rajan has returned to the rigor of Chicago GSB to continue asking and answering the big questions of economics.

Dr Rajan whos had a meteoric rise both at the school as well as on the international scene -- was on loan from the GSB to the IMF. He became a full professor at GSB in just four years where he also holds an endowed chair.
An alumnus of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, he completed his postgraduate program in management in 1987. He also completed his B Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Massachusetts Institute of Technology awarded him a PhD in 1991 on his thesis titled Essays on Banking.

Soon after, in 1991 itself, he joined GSB as assistant professor in Finance. He was the Fischer Black Visiting Professor at M.I.T. Sloan School of Management in 2000-2001 and Visiting Professor of Finance at Kellogg School, Northwestern University in 1996-1997. In January 2003, he was awarded the Fisher Black Prize awarded by the American Finance Association for the person under 40 who has contributed the most to the theory and practice of Finance. He won the Brattle Prize for his distinguished paper in the Journal of Finance for three consecutive year starting 2000.

When asked how Chicago values influence his work, Dr Rajan is quoted as saying, I think Chicagos values are always with you. In the traditional Chicago sense it forces you to ask the questions, Tell me why people wouldnt think of this and work to resolve it? Why do we have to come in with a heavy hand and deal with this problem? More generally, Chicago also means competition for ideas. I see my role in the fund as one of throwing out ideas and pushing them forward.

Billing this return as an important addition to the schools reputation, Chicago GSB said, Raghu Rajan is one more reason Chicago GSB is known as a business force, not just a business school.

He was also on the Advisory Board of the Comptroller General of the United States. That apart, hes been a consultant to the Indian governments Ministry of Finance, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve Board, the Swedish Parliamentary Commission and various other financial institutions. His book Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists that he penned along with Luigi Zingales was released by Crown Business in 2003.
