Offering advice to the passing-out batch of the International Management Institute (IMI), institute director Dr C S Venkata Ratnam said, Its time to take up monumental responsibilities in the emerging global market which is full of uncertainties and challenges. To become a global leader you will have to show courage, conviction and exposure across functions, locations and businesses.
Laying emphasis on teamwork, he said that effective management is not about individual brilliance but about teamwork. There is only one percent dependence on your own individual brilliance, and 99 per cent on your ability to be a good team player. You should be like great music composer Zubin Mehta, who can lead a team of brilliant performers, he said.
Emphasizing of ethical behavior, he added, There is a need for focusing on values system and ethical behavior. Only with ethics and values can you build a sustainable career.
Outlining the challenges for graduates, Dr Venkata Ratnam said, The challenge in front of managers today is balancing work and life priorities, and thats not going to be easy. Work pressures are on the rise, and so are family needs.
In his speech, he also shared details of the progress his institute is making: To further our international and research credentials, IMI will focus on three major areas: MNCs, cross-cultural management, and mergers and
acquisitions. Greater understanding in these areas is the need of the hour as our economy integrates with global forces. He further added, We are also expanding our network with renowned B-schools in North America, Europe and Asia.
IMI is also considering fine-tuning its brand positioning, Dr Venkata Ratnam informed the gathering. Inputs will be gathered from a students competition. We will launch a contest for students to come up with creative solutions for positioning and branding of IMI. We will fine tune it, along with the involvement of faculty and other stakeholders, he said.
