IIMs to add 157 new seats to accommodate OBC reservations

The student intake capacity in six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is expected to increase by 157 during 2007-08. These are some of the details from the report of the Outcome Budget placed on the table of Parliament a few days back.

The report further adds that IIM Lucknow will add the maximum 45 seats this year. IIM Ahmedabad is expected to add 34 seats, IIM Bangalore 30 seats and IIM Calcutta 18 seats. Younger siblings IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode are expected to add 15 seats each.

The implementation of the recommendations of the Oversight Committee would see a phased increase of intake capacity over a period of three years, besides augmenting infrastructural capacities as also the strength of the faculty in 17 Central universities, it said.

In other Central-government funded institutions, Delhi University alone is expected to add 3,142 seats followed by Allahabad University with 1,134 seats, Banaras Hindu University 447 seats and Jamia Milia Islamia 301, the Outcome Budget of Department of Higher Education. The intake capacity of seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is expected to increase by 1,788 during the year. While IIT Roorkee will increase its capacity 309, IIT Kharagpur will take additional 295 students, IIT Kanpur will add 267 seats and IIT Mumbai will add 209 seats.
