MDI on the fast track to be a global B-School: MDI director Dr Sujit Basu

Dr Sujit Kumar Basu, Director, MDI, talked about how his institute is working towards emerging as a global school: I am proud to announce that in its efforts towards globalization and becoming a world-class business school, MDI has developed linkages with institutes in the US and 21 countries in Europe; the total number of MoUs with international academic institutes is 39.

Dr Basu added, The Executive Management Program, both full time and part-time, and the postgraduate program in business management (PGPM) have been accredited by the Association of MBAs. I take pride in saying that MDI is the first institute in India and the second in Asia to get this recognition.

MDI, or Management Development Institute, is a leading private B-school that generates its own funding. Our institute is self-financed, and governed by its own board. The institute does not get any plan or non-plan grants from the state or the central governments or any other agencies. This year the gross income of the institute is likely to be 22% up compared to the previous year and is likely to touch Rs 38 crore, Dr Basu further said.

MDI has been working closely with the industry so that managerial needs of the corporate sector can be well addressed; for this, it has redesigned the curriculum and incorporated the changing needs of the business world. The institute conducts more than 100 customized executive development programs every year for middle and senior level managers of corporates.

Dr Basu recently took as director of MDI. Born in December, 1946, he is a gold-medalist of the University of Calcutta. Before joining MDI he was vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati -- a Central University at Santiniketan founded by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore -- for five-years. Dr. Basu was also the founder-director of the National Institute of Management in Kolkata (now known as the Army Institute of Management), and a professor at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

MDI was established in 1973 with the primary objective of developing business leaders. It has been consistently ranked among the Top Five B-schools in the country.
