A cash surplus of Rs.20, 000 crore before dividend and a record-breaking performance in the first nine months of the current year. With this spectacular feat, Yadav is sure to continue his whistling tour of management institutes where he is a man in great demand. Several prestigious B-schools including the IIMs have invited Yadav for some rustic management lessons.
Presenting the Railway Budget 2007-08, Lalu Prasad on Monday slashed upper class fares up to six per cent and effected a token reduction by Re 1 in second class ordinary fares while proposing no across-the-board freight hike. Eight new Garib Raths and 32 pairs of new trains are being introduced.
The annual plan for 2007-08 has been fixed at Rs 31,000 crore. This includes budgetary support of Rs 7,611 crore, internal generation of Rs 17,323 crore and extra-budgetary resources of Rs 5,740 crore.
Lalu Prasad maintained his four years record of not raising passenger fares and in a bid to lure traffic from low-cost airlines, he announced reduction in fares in AC first class by three per cent in busy season and six per cent in lean season while it will be two per cent and four per cent in AC two tier class.
In a move designed to endear Railways and Yadav to students community, a 50 per cent concession in second class will be offered to candidates appearing for main written examinations conducted by the Staff Selection Commission and the UPSC.
In September last year, Lalu Yadav delivered a lecture to the management students and the faculty at IIM-A, explaining how he turned around the Indian Railways from a loss-making operation to a public sector unit that stunned everyone by earning a profit of Rs 15,000 crore (Rs 150 billion) in 2005-06. He was invitation to deliver a lecture came after IIM-As Prof G Raghuram conducted a detailed study on the Indian Railways turnaround and decided to introduce the case study as a part of the curriculum. Leading western Schools soon took to that trend, and made meeting with our rustic but shrewd minister an integral part of their Bharat Darshan. Expect this trend to continue!
