Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director IIM Calcutta has resigned from his position. As per the media reports Prof Sarkar resigned on August 23, 2023 due to some differences with Board of Governors although in his resignation letter, Prof Sarkar has cited some personal reasons.
It is learnt that the resignation of Prof Sarkar has not yet been accepted by the IIM Calcutta Board of Governors and is expected to be discussed in the forthcoming Board Meeting to be held on September 8, 2023. Meanwhile, IIM Calcutta has removed the message of IIM Calcutta director from its website https://www.iimcal.ac.in/director-message.
This is the second instance when the IIM Calcutta director has resigned. Earlier predecessor of Prof Sarkar, Prof Anju Seth, the woman director of IIM Calcutta had resigned in March 2021 and the institute was running without the permanent director since then till Prof Sarkar was appointed as full time Director of IIM Calcutta on August 21, 2021.
Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar is a professor at the Management Information Systems Group of IIM Calcutta. He obtained his B.Tech, M.Tech., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He has an outstanding academic record, and is a leading researcher in the field of information systems with numerous publications in prestigious international journals to his credit.
Prof Sarkar is known for his vast experience in key leadership roles in India and extensive exposure to universities and academic communities worldwide.
