I gave time to each section everyday. Giving mocks was an equally important part of my preparations. I gave mocks every alternate day and made sure to analyse them the very next day. Other than that, dedication was a driving force in cracking CAT. Set selection formed another part of my strategy which came through practice and knowing my strong areas. Keeping in mind the speed in accuracy took time to develop but was integral.

Q: Before we understand your preparation strategy, please share your key criteria why you preferred to join MDI instead of IIMs, NMIMS?
I opted for MDI Gurgaon PGDM after giving a due thought based on the following three important points – What are the courses offered? Does the B-school have the course that I desire; What is the Ranking of the particular major in India and lastly how good are the Networking opportunities.

Q: Please share your sectional preparation strategy for CAT? How did you prepare for VARC?
Reading few passages everyday was my priority because a chunk of marks are it’s part. Solving the rest of VA questions in sets was another everyday part. I worked on developing my vocabulary as well.

I solved more and more sets. I don’t think there is any other way to crack this other than practice. The more timed sets one does, the more kinds of questions are solved. This helps in making our brain work in that particular direction and also be in a habit of quick calculations.

Basics of QA should be very strong. The formulas should be on your fingertips. Practice is needed for that as well, to see a question and instantly know how to solve it.

Q: Was there any particular section/area that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
Quant turned out to be a little problematic for me. I didn’t have enough practice, and score in mocks were disheartening. Choosing the right questions and practice increased my score tremendously.

Q: What role did Mocks play in your success? How many mocks did you attempt before the exam?
I think Mocks are the most important part of preparing for these exams. Equally important is analysing each Mock. It gives us an idea where we stand and what weaklings we need to take care of. For CAT, I gave approximately 30 Mocks, plus mocks for the other exams.

Q: Did you self-prepare for CAT Exam or did you attend a Coaching Centre and why?
I attended MBA Guru coaching classes as I wanted to make sure I completed the syllabus on time. Plus, the mock series of MBA Guru was good. It also gave me access to faculty members who cleared a lot of doubts.

I referred to the ones my coaching centre provided. But my major focus was on mocks. The books had varied sets which did help me get an idea of what to expect.

Q: Please share your strategy for the CAT Day. What was your last-minute preparation? How did you plan your CAT test taking?
Try to be as relaxed as one can be on the day of the exam. I didn’t prepare anything that morning. The day before also, I just went through Quant formulas and that was it. When one panics during exam, one blanks out on questions that are easily answerable. One should not treat the exam as life or death situation, rather give it with a cool head. So that’s what I did.

Q: According to you, overall, how can B-schools make their MBA admission process less cumbersome for MBA applicants.
According to me, the long wait between interviews and results really gets stressful. Reducing that would be helpful.

My message to CAT 2023 aspirants is to continue with Practice, practice and practice. The more you do, the more confident you will be on the day of exam. Do not leave things for tomorrow and don’t let yourself slack.

My CAT preparation journey was full of peaks and valleys which started 2 years ago. In September 2021, I decided to appear for CAT Exam while continuing my graduation to check the depth and roughness of ocean that I had to sail. For the first time, I appeared for CAT 2021 without especially preparing for the exam and got around 70 percentile. It sparked a confidence in me to prepare myself with the best possible method for next attempt. In April 2022, I joined a coaching institute MBAGURU and started the preparation. I appeared in CAT 2022, which went fine as per my expectations. I was hoping to get decent percentile around 98. When the result was out on December 21, 2022, I was shocked by getting astonishing 99.67 percentile which was by far my best score including all the mocks. I divided my CAT preparation strategy in 3+2+1 months. For first 3 months, I focused more on learning concepts and building concepts and identifying weak and strong concepts. Then next step was building concepts and strengthening weaker and stronger concepts. And last month I utilized to make my body cycle as per exam day needs and throughout solved mocks whose frequency I increased with time.

While I was shortlisted by all the IIMs, FMS Delhi, IIT Delhi, the period from January to March 2023 was a hectic period where I was preparing, writing SOPs, filling the form of all the colleges that gave me PI calls. I tried to perform my best in all PIs' but some went my way others didn’t.

On April 28 2023, IIM Calcutta declared its result in the evening. Initially, the site didn’t open so I checked again around 7 PM. I was nervous as IIM A had rejected me while IIM B and FMS Delhi had wait listed me. In nervousness, I entered wrong details and my face turned pale and gloomy and my mother who was beside me understood it to be another rejection. However, I decided to check again and entered details carefully, result popped down starting with congratulation and I started jumping and shouting like a child. Maa calmed me down and I could see tears of happiness in her eyes and sigh of relief on my papa's face. My message and tips for the candidates preparing for CAT 2023 are that they should have Self-belief which is very important to ace the exam. Showing up for practice daily despite last night failure is an important habit, you should be consistent in following your preparation plan. For Quantitative Ability preparation, I worked on knowing my basic concepts and working on solving the questions that I already know would be solved quickly especially on the questions and concepts which became familiar to me. This built up my skills and strengths, improved speed and accuracy.
For Quantitative Ability preparation, I worked on knowing my basic concepts and working on solving the questions that I already know would be solved quickly especially on the questions and concepts which became familiar to me. This built up my skills and strengths, improved speed and accuracy.

Mocks played a huge role in my success. Throughout my prep, I gave approximately 25 mocks and also attempted all the past CAT papers from 2017 onwards. Analysing the mocks regularly and being consistent with it plays a huge role in CAT.

I attempted my last mock 5 days prior to the CAT Day. My last-minute preparation was just going through the important quant formulas. My plan for CAT test taking was to really stick to the time that I had set for myself and not to waste my time on any particular question. Being a complete newbie in CAT, I blindly followed the suggestions of my mentors (Hunny Sir, Gaurav Sir, and Shahzar Sir) from Elites Grid, and I believe it helped me a lot. I scored around 98 percentile in CAT 2021 and around 99.7 percentile in QA. Along with CAT, I also appeared for IIFT (99.4 percentile) and SNAP (99.9 percentile) and finally secured an admission offer from IIFT Delhi. However, as suggested by my Elites Grid mentors, I decided to appear for CAT again, and this time I focused more on my weaknesses (the VARC section, of course!) and capitalised on my strengths. I joined the IMS, Career Launcher, and Elites Grid test series and analysed my performance in detail.

VARC has been and continues to be my pain point since the day I started preparing for CAT. Luckily, I had the first slot, and hence, there were no biases when I went to attempt the paper. Although I faced a tech glitch in my DILR section, my ability to stay calm helped me, and I was able to capitalise on my strength, which was the QA section.

Q: What motivated you to Join SPJIMR? What were your top three criteria?
I had an interview opportunity at SPJIMR last year; however, I was unable to perform at my best due to contracting COVID-19. Nevertheless, the enriching interaction with SPJIMR's faculty motivated me to attempt the CAT exam again. I believe what makes SPJIMR different from the other institutes is its focus on not just academics but also the five non-classroom initiatives. These initiatives help in the holistic development of a student. Apart from this, location is also important. Being in Mumbai provides you an advantage in networking with business leaders because Mumbai is where most company offices are.

Q: According to you, how can B-schools make their MBA admission process less cumbersome for MBA applicants.
I believe that when you have numerous interviews scheduled on the same days, the process becomes very hectic. Travelling to various cities to attend various interviews can be difficult for persons who don't live in tier 1 cities. Therefore, in my view, improved cooperation between the institutes with the option to select the interview format would be beneficial.

Q: Finally, your message and tips for candidates preparing for CAT 2023
Because the CAT exam is so unpredictable, luck does matter on test day. This, however, does not minimise the effort and perseverance required for the exam. One piece of suggestion is to concentrate on other tests as well, such as XAT, IIFT, and SNAP. Everyone has different strong and weak points, so it's more important to play to your strengths.

One of the biggest challenges came in the form of time management as I was preparing for the process along with my office workload. Balancing the quality of my work with the effort needed for CAT preparation and GDPI preparation was a challenge, but what helped me the most was maintaining consistent efforts in regular timeslots.

The entire process can be made less cumbersome by focusing more on the candidate and their experiences and values, instead of focusing on topics like current affairs or static GK. While these areas hold importance for a future manager, the initial selection of a b-school student should be done based on their potential which can only be judged by understanding their thought process, instead of their rote learning abilities.

I attended TIME for CAT coaching. I wanted to have a structured and supervised approach to my CAT preparation, hence I joined a coaching centre. My experience was great and the extra help surely played a huge part in my CAT success.

Q: How did you perform in CAT 2022?
I scored 99.69 overall percentile in CAT 2022 and scored 93.02%ile in VARC, 99.97%ile in DILR and 98.02 %ile in QA.

Q: What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT?
My preparation started from January 2022. I followed Arun Sharma’s books sincerely and gave all the mocks and analysed each one diligently. I took a coaching class, just to keep check on how many chapters I need to finish preparing till when, and get my doubts resolved from the faculty members.

Q: Please share your sectional preparation strategy for CAT?
For each of the sections, again I followed Arun Sharma’s books and gave sectional tests after completing each chapter to get a timed experience. I used to revisit the topics by attempting moderate and higher-level sectional tests later on.

Q: How did you prepare for Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning?
For DILR, I completed the Arun Sharma book end to end. It really improved my way of tackling the sets. I used to get my doubts clarified if I couldn’t solve a set. Again, I practiced via sectional tests as well, as you need to monitor the time as well. I took coaching from TIME, so their booklets were useful as well to solve high level sets. DILR needs a lot of practice. You need to be able to formulate the right approach.

Being an engineer, the QA part went a bit easy for me. I completed Arun Sharma’s book on QA. This book explains every concept very clearly. I attempted sectional tests as well. QA again requires a lot of practice as you need to do the questions very fast.

Q: How did you prepare for Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension?
For VARC, I focused more on the RCs, as I was not able to attain higher accuracy in VA. I practiced VARC a lot via sectional tests.

Q: Was there any particular section that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
I was very weak at VARC. I used to attempt a bit of VA and some RCs initially in the mocks. Then I noticed that I was able to do well when I attempted just the RCs, as VA’s Para jumbles and Para summary were fetching me negative points. I started attempting just the RCs and my negative marks were no more there and overall score improved a lot. I would suggest that you play around in mocks, try different strategies in the mocks and then select the one that suits you the best.

The mocks really helped me a lot. It is the most important thing. Taking mocks is the most essential thing to do. Every mock should be taken very seriously. I attempted all the mocks that TIME and IMS had provided.

Q: Please share CAT test taking strategy. What was your last-minute preparation?
My CAT test taking strategy was – I focused to solve RCs only, Then in DILR, I solved 3 sets, For QA I used the rounds technique. I did not have any last-minute preparation as such. I just revised QA formulae a couple of hours before the exam.

Q: How did you prepare for GD/PI/WAT Rounds?
I took IMS’s GDPI WAT preparation course. They helped me via taking my mock PIs, giving out material for WAT and also the daily current affairs lectures were very useful. And the best thing was the WATPI Bible.

Q: With such high percentiles and a strong profile, what were the calls you received?

Q: What were your top criteria for deciding which B-school take admission in?
My three criteria for deciding which B-school to join were: First, the kind of culture that the B-school has in terms of learning environment, peer learning and student teacher interaction. I think that is the most important factor; Second, the legacy that the B-school has, and the alumni network; Third, kind of opportunities that come to the campus for the role I aspire to get in.

Q: According to you, overall, how can B-schools make their MBA admission process less cumbersome for MBA applicants…
I think there should be just one application for all the IIMs. It is very cumbersome to keep a track of each and every application separately.

Q: Finally, your message and tips for candidates preparing for CAT Exam
Nobody can motivate you, unless you motivate yourself. You should know very clearly that why did you start preparing and why do you want your dream B-school. Reason needs to be clear in your mind, because, if that is clear, you will not find yourself struggling to practice, give mocks and be focused. CAT is no joke; it is highly competitive. Focus on improving your marks, (and not percentile, that will follow marks) after each mock attempt and never miss any mock. CAT should be THE priority. Stay focused, and motivated, it is a very long journey and each step that you take can be a deal maker or breaker. All the best guys !! :)
