XLRI has announced the XAT 2027 exam pattern. There is no change in XAT exam pattern. XAT exam pattern is designed to test your problem-solving, logical thinking, and decision-making skills and is divided into two parts. XAT Part 1 pattern consists of 75 questions to be solved in 170 minutes. This part consists of three sections: Decision Making, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. XAT Part 2 pattern consists of 20 questions on General Knowledge (GK) to be solved in 10 minutes. Note that XAT GK section marks are not considered when calculating the XAT percentile, and used only for XLRI Jamshedpur admission process. XAT exam duration is 180 minutes (3 hours). According to XAT marking scheme, each question carries one mark, making the total to 95 marks. Note that XAT Essay Writing section was removed from XAT 2026 exam pattern. Check table below for a clear understanding.
XAT 2027 syllabus can be divided into four sections: Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge. MBAUniverse.com has compiled the syllabus for each section, based on official information from XLRI Jamshedpur and type of questions that have appeared in past XAT exams. Check highlights below. You can also download XAT Exam Syllabus PDF from link below.
- VA&LR section: This section includes critical & analytical reasoning, reading comprehensions (including poems & passages), vocabulary, basic English grammar, and other related exercises such as para jumbles and cloze tests.
- Decision Making (DM) Section: This section presents scenarios drawn from both personal and professional lives of managers and leaders in organizations. Candidates will be required to apply critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and prioritization to make informed decisions.
- Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation: The questions in the QA section are primarily formulated around 10th standard Mathematics. Notably, the emphasis is on application-oriented problems. The questions on DI are about clear interpretation, summarization and insightful analysis of the data.
- General Knowledge Section: The General Knowledge section in XAT exam has 20 questions. Out of this, 12 questions are on current affairs and 8 questions are from static GK. This mix allows for a balanced evaluation of candidates' awareness of both ongoing events and foundational knowledge. It is important to note that scores from the General Knowledge section are not considered while calculating the XAT percentile. However, XLRI Jamshedpur uses GK scores during its final selection process.

This is a common question among MBA aspirants. Understanding the exam structure of CAT exam and XAT exam structure is the first step to answer the question whether XAT is actually tougher than CAT. CAT has three sections with fixed time for each section. Whereas, XAT has longer timed sections and contains Decision Making and General Knowledge. XAT is more comprehensive, whereas CAT, with a shorter duration and strict limits, brings more pressure on time.
Feature | CAT 2026 | XAT 2027 |
|---|---|---|
Duration | 2 hours (120 minutes) | 3 hours (180 minutes) |
Number of Sections | 3 | 4 |
Sections | VARC, DILR, QA | Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, QA & DI, General Knowledge |
Marking Scheme | +3 correct, –1 wrong (MCQs) | +1 correct, –0.25 wrong, no negative marking for GK |
No of Answer Options | 4 | 5 |
To answer is XAT is tougher than CAT, it is important to analyze different sections. Both tests have the same three sections - Verbal, Quantitative, and Logical. However, XAT is further complicated with sections including Decision Making and General Knowledge. The comparison of XAT and CAT difficulty levels section-wise will allow aspirants clarity on what angle to prepare, the time to spend on the sections, and question presentation, hence, maximizing their efforts. The table below shows section-wise CAT and XAT difficulty levels:
Section | CAT | XAT | Tougher Exam |
|---|---|---|---|
Verbal | RC & VA | RC + Logical + Poetry | CAT |
Quant & DI | Logical and conceptual | Calculation heavy DI and lengthy Quants questions | XAT |
Decision Making | Not included | Caselets & ethical dilemmas | XAT |
GK | Not included | Current affairs + Static | XAT |
In summary, multiple factors contribute to the perception that XAT is tougher than CAT. The exam’s length, diverse sections, and unpredictable questions make it demanding. Below are some important points why many believe XAT is tougher than CAT:
- Additional Sections: XAT includes Decision Making and General Knowledge, both absent in CAT.
- Longer Duration: XAT runs 3 hours versus CAT's 2 hours, demanding higher stamina and concentration.
- Question Variety: XAT spans ethical, analytical, logical, and numerical reasoning in a single sitting.
- Five Answer Options: XAT has five options per question versus CAT's four, reducing the probability of correct guesses.
- Time Flexibility: XAT allows free movement across Part 1 sections; mismanagement of time within the 170-minute window can cost marks.
XAT 2027 Mock Tests are the best preparation tool for exam preparation. According to XAT Toppers, you should take 10-15 XAT Mocks to improve your question solving skills.
