IIMs-HRD Min Impasse: SC to hear quota plea today

The Centres plea will come up for hearing before a bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and L S Panta, which had stayed the implementation of certain provisions of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admissions) Act enabling a quota in institutions like IIMs, IITs and AIIMS.

Experts opine that the Government has the tough task of satisfying the court today that its application for clarification and vacation of the March 29 stay is not a petition for a review of the interim order.

Management education is incomplete without understanding international trade: G K Pillai, Commerce Secretary

Commerce secretary and Chairman of Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) Mr G K Pillai, in his convocation address at IIFT, said, Management education in todays world cannot be complete without in-depth understanding of international trade.

He observed that India has met its target of US $ 125 billion in exports during the fiscal 2006-07 in spite of increasing non-tariff barriers as well as rising rupee. An increased export target of US $160 billion for the year 2007-08 and an export target of $ 200 billion for 2008-09 have been set.

Said Mr K T Chacko Director IIFT during his first convocation address at IIFT, The institute has been instrumental in meeting Nations external trade sectors needs of qualified Human resource.

Commenting on the impact of globalization Mr Chacko said, This is the millennium which has seen the impact of globalization at its fullest, not only have we seen unprecedented opportunities, but also have faced newer challenge...We have seized the new opportunities and are facing the challenges through new innovative ways of teaching training and research.

While several concerns have been raised about sustainability of the economy, I believe that we are still in the initial phases of the growth of our economy, he said. Drawing parallels with the early growth phase of economic giants Japan and China, he added: The Indian economy today has the same characteristics as the economies of Japan and China in the early years of their growth: favorable demographics, human capital, rising competitiveness of the industry and raising saving rates.
