IIM Shillong offers 4 years full time doctoral programme – PhD in Management.
The program is immersive, rigorous and interdisciplinary. Field work with a deep industry connect forms an integral part of study. An important part of the programme is dissertation which begins in year three. On completion of the programme candidates will be awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by IIM Shillong.
The scholars are expected to complete the program in four years. However, in case the programme is not completed within the stipulated time, the participants may be allowed to have two more years to complete the programme.
Application should be submitted with a tentative research proposal, wherein the candidate will have to present the tentative research problem proposed to be researched upon.

The commitment to the Doctoral program is four years which includes an enriching research focused, out-put oriented course work. The scholars are expected to complete the program in four years and ensure that they complete the requirements of the program within this stipulated time. However, the candidates who are unable to complete the program within the stipulated time may be allowed to continue in the program depending upon their progress. After completion of four years into the program an extension of two years may be granted subject to approval from the Doctoral Committee.
In the first year, the structure of course work comprises core, flexi-core, and research based courses leading to an understanding of management discipline, building theoretical foundations in the core area, develop basic skills for analyzing managerial problems and instill research interest. In their second year, the scholars will undergo Term-IV courses. As part of Term-IV courses, the scholar will undertake two credits from the PGP Basket of electives in consultation with their supervisors. The participant will start working on the primary research problem of the PhD thesis under the guidance of the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC).
From third year onwards, the doctoral dissertation work provides them with an opportunity to make original contributions to an area of management or to one of its disciplines. The scholar is expected to work towards presenting papers at a conference, journal publications and other scholarly contributions. The candidate will have to prepare and submit the doctoral thesis and then submit the duly modified thesis for evaluation. Every scholar is expected to work at least 10 hours every week during the third and fourth year as Research/Teaching Assistant with a faculty member

- Qualified Common Admission Test (CAT) held by IIMs in last 2 years form the date of application, or Qualified GATE, GRE, GMAT, and JRF (UGC/CSIR) examination and have a valid score
- Candidates who have already obtained a two-year PGDM from any of the IIMs with a CPGA equivalent to 60% or more are exempted from the above requirement and can apply directly through the prescribed Application Form.

MDI Gurgaon application fees is Rs. 3,000, inclusive of 18% GST. Candidates can select all the MDI programmes they wish to apply for, and pay the fees online.

MDI Gurgaon PGDM BA final selection process is a multi-stage process.
- MDI Gurgaon shortlists candidates for the WAT-GD-PI process on the basis of the details provided in the application form and their CAT 2025 scores.
- Stage-I MDI shortlisting: MDI Gurgaon shortlists candidates for the WAT-GD-PI round based on multiple parameters, with the CAT score carrying the highest weightage of 70%. Academic performance in Class 10, 12, and Graduation collectively contributes 15%, while work experience (10%), academic diversity (2.5%), and gender diversity (2.5%) ensure a balanced and inclusive selection process.
- Shortlisted candidates will be called for Group Discussion, Written Analysis Test, and Personal Interviews between February and April 2026 at a center in one of the following cities: Bengaluru, Gurugram, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
- The final selection of the candidates will be based on weightages of CAT scores, WAT-GD-PI, Behavioral Assessment test, Academic merit, Academic diversity, Work experience, and social diversity etc as per weightages given in Table below.

The Fellow Programme in Management (non-residential) is designed to cater to the scholarly needs of working business executives. It prepare executives for careers in management teaching and research, as well as in management practice, consulting and development. The Fellow Programme in Management has to be completed within 4 years after the registration, which may be extended up to 7 years maximum (seven years) depending on the merit of the case and favorable review of work progress by the FPM Committee. The FPM Programme consists of two phases. The first phase of the Programme involves course work, followed by a Comprehensive Research Evaluation. The second phase requires scholars to work on their thesis, which involves the preparation of a thesis proposal, writing of the thesis, a final Viva Voce, an examination based on the thesis.
The student is required to take First Year courses of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). These courses are approximately of three months duration. Only after completion of PGDM level course work, can the student start with FPM level course work. Scholars who already hold an MBA degree are exempted from this course work requirement. Fellow-level courses consititute three levels General Core Courses, Area Core Courses and Elective Courses.

Doctoral Programme in Management
IIFT offers 3 years full time Ph.D. Programme in Management. The programme covers Doctoral research in a variety of business related areas leading to the award of Ph.D degree. The programme is targeted at research scholars, members of teaching faculty in universities and institutes of higher learning, professionals from private, public and government sectors. The main objectives of the Ph.D. Programme are to facilitate pursuing higher studies and advanced research in International Business; to encourage and doing research on contemporary issues in the field of International Business; to encourage publication of research papers in academic journals, occasional papers, monographs, books and other publications.
One of the primary purposes of doctoral studies is to encourage in-depth analysis and enrich knowledge in the chosen field. This includes the ability to apply independently methodologies of scientific research as well as to create new scientific knowledge. Further, the candidate should demonstrate an ability to analyze critically research results and to understand their importance in the relevant context. Skills to present and to effectively communicate research results are needed in order to succeed in postgraduate studies. Thus, it is important to assume an adequate knowledge and understanding of the problems, research methodologies, historical developments, theory formulation and societal importance of the scientific disciplines which are related to the candidates own research field. IIFT has two campuses viz, New Delhi and Kolkata. Selected candidates can attend the course work classes from Delhi as well as Kolkata (via video conferencing)
There is no Programme fee for Indian Full Time Ph.D. Scholars. They are offered scholarships and financial assistance. An amount of 37,000/- P.M. + HRA for first two years and 42,000/- P.M. + HRA for remaining three years will be offered by the Institute. Ph.D. Programme shall be for a minimum duration of three (3) years, including course work (two semesters), from the date of admission to the Ph.D. Programme. During the first year, selected scholars need to complete the coursework at the Institute covering two semesters. On successful completion of the coursework including the Seminar Paper and approval of the proposed research topic (Synopsis Confirmation), a confirmation certificate will be issued along with the name of the Ph.D. Supervisor. A three- member Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) will be set up for each scholar for his/her doctoral research. The scholar has to present his/ her research progress to the DAC on a regular basis.
